Our evangelist, High Priest, David Kaleikau, blessed our congregation a year ago. We have pondered over Section 85 of the Doctrine & Covenants, which admonished us to establish a house of prayer, fasting, worship and so on. I know we have worked on establishing a house of prayer as we studied, prayed, and heard sermons regarding prayer. I hope our prayer lives have increased. I still struggle, but I know that my insights have deepened to believe that there really is power in prayer as now I rely on prayer whenever there is a need.
As we enter a new phase of congregational growth, it is my challenge to the congregation for the next year, that we do not leave prayer behind, but with a prayerful attitude let us examine various ways to reverence the Lord Jesus in worship both in our lives and in our congregation. The prevailing methods are not wrong as variety or new breath is always refreshing. "He who Is" is and always has been present in all our services. However, if we need to find new ways to reach out to the modern generation of today, I'm sure He will be there also.
May we discover ways of ministry in this new time knowing that He can lead us. Let us discover the wonder of God together is my prayer.
We thank thee Lord for basic needs, constant care, friendships, family, love, heritage, blessings ….
As we move into fall we reflect on all the happenings in our lives that show the constant care of God as well as expressing our joy and blessings of all we've experienced.
Loretta & Humpo - We enjoyed a trip to Hawaii for a family reunion and wedding of our niece. It's been five years since the last reunion and we are all getting younger and younger!!! We honored the 2nd generation and my parents are the oldest of that generation. We all enjoyed the food, fun & fellowship.
Evelyn - I am thankful for the love and concern shown by the entire Kalihi Congregation during my stay in Hawaii. Each Sunday, I was greeted with so much warmth. MAHALO KALIHI you surely emanate His Spirit of Love.
Gloria -Fellowship with a Friend - In August my dear friend Sister Eugenie Courtright called me. She lives in a retirement home for Catholic Sisters in Monrovia, California. She asked me if she could spend her two weeks vacation time with me. She is 84 years old and it is hard for her to travel alone. I was overjoyed to have her company. She has been my doggie sitter for my Shih-Tzu Keiki in the past. She loves dogs, so she has fun throwing the ball with Keiki. On September 4th I drove to Monrovia to pick her up. After a hamburger lunch, we arrived at my home to be enthusiastically met by Keiki. I had purchased tickets for the play "Leilani's Hibiscus" being performed at Torrance Armstrong Theater. I was told there would be some Japanese spoken and some Hawaiian songs sung. We both were looking forward to it. The play opened and after five minutes, Sister and I looked at each other and giggled. The WHOLE play was all in Japanese. We had no idea what was being said. Both of us fell asleep, but awoke at intermission. Laughing, we said goodnight to our other friends who were Japanese and could at least catch a word here and there. All my friend could say was, "what a funny story I'll share with the other sisters". At least I provided her with a huge laugh and a funny story to share!
We pot lucked at Mary Shimidzu's. Mary has always graciously invited us for her delicious home cooked meals. This time it was decided to give her a rest and a treat. We "love ya, Mary."
Do you remember South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein? Our congregation had an enjoyable night at the Torrance Theatre watching the stage play. A walk through the Japanese Gardens located on the grounds was a sight to see. Thank you Bob Waterhouse for picking up the tickets.
The Gardena Congregation participated in the Heritage Festival sponsored by the City of Gardena. It featured cultural entertainment, arts & craft and ethnic food. We made & sold andagi (Okinawan doughnut) and Nantu (Okinawan rice cake). It was a sell out. We sold out before noon.
We've had interesting visitors to our congregation. Ed Bailey, our guest speaker, gave an inspiring message.
Charlie and Janice Sora met with Henry and Sets Miyashiro at Loretta and Humpo Miyashiros along with Evelyn Sora. Everyone had a wonderful time. Loretta served the delicious Rainbow cake from Kings Hawaiian Bakery.
Who are we? Can you guess who these people are?
